Gramercy, Murray Hill and Kips Bay sit on Manhattan’s East Side between Union Square and Midtown. They mix big doorman rentals, prewar co-ops, townhouses and walk-ups, and they share one thing on moving day: Midtown parking rules. Here is how to plan a move here, with the official rules that apply to the truck. For a free written estimate, call (646) 455-1930.

Gramercy Park

The Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Gramercy Park Historic District on September 20, 1966. In its words, the park is a private square, “generally restricted to owners; the original deed provides that each of the lot holders has a key” (LPC designation report). The streets around it hold townhouses, clubs and apartment buildings, so a move here can be a stair move in a townhouse or an elevator move in a large co-op on the same block.

Doorman buildings and co-ops: book everything

Most large buildings in these neighborhoods run moves through management. Expect a booked time window, usually on weekdays, a reserved service elevator or loading dock, and a certificate of insurance (COI) with exact wording. Co-ops may also want your move date approved in advance. Ask for the move rules from both buildings as soon as you have a date, and book both elevators for the same window. We send the COI your building asks for.

Townhouses and walk-ups

The side streets also have townhouses and walk-up buildings. Measure the tightest stair turn and the apartment door, tell us the floor, and list the pieces that come apart. Small, heavy boxes for books and dishes make every carry on the stairs safer.

Midtown rules at the curb

For parking, these neighborhoods are inside Midtown. From 14th to 60th Streets between First and Twelfth Avenues, no vehicle may double park from 7 AM to 7 PM, every day except Sunday. Between First and Eighth Avenues, a vehicle making pickups or deliveries is also limited to 3 hours at the curb in those hours, unless signs allow more (NYC Department of Finance, codes 46, 47 and 86). Portions of Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue have signed commercial vehicle restrictions (NYC DOT), so check the signs: a side-street entrance or a loading dock is often the easier place to load.

For a large apartment, ask us how to time the day so the truck is not at the curb longer than the signs allow. An early start or a Sunday move can help. Our guide to moving truck parking rules in NYC has the full list.

Getting to Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island

The FDR Drive is closed to commercial vehicles (NYC DOT). The Queens-Midtown Tunnel has a 12 ft 1 in height limit and an 8 ft 6 in width limit (MTA), so whether a truck can use it depends on its size; we plan the crossing for the truck we send. Heading east? Read movers in Queens and Astoria or moving from Queens to Long Island.

Tolls

All three neighborhoods are inside the Congestion Relief Zone, which covers Manhattan’s local streets from 60th Street south; trucks pay the toll when they enter it (MTA). Ask us to include tolls in your written estimate.

Gramercy, Murray Hill and Kips Bay moving checklist

  • Get the move rules and the COI wording from both buildings.
  • Book the service elevator or dock for the same window at both ends.
  • Measure doors, stair turns, the elevator car and your largest pieces.
  • Check the parking signs on both blocks a few days before.
  • Keep keys, documents, medicine and chargers with you.

Common questions

Can a moving truck double park in Murray Hill or Kips Bay?

Not from 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday to Saturday. The Midtown no-double-parking area runs from 14th to 60th Streets between First and Twelfth Avenues (NYC Department of Finance).

How long can the moving truck stay at the curb?

Between First and Eighth Avenues, from 14th to 60th Streets, a vehicle making pickups or deliveries is limited to 3 hours from 7 AM to 7 PM, except Sundays, unless signs allow more (NYC Department of Finance, code 86). Meters and other signs also apply.

Can a moving truck use the Queens-Midtown Tunnel?

Only if it is under the tunnel limits: 12 ft 1 in high and 8 ft 6 in wide (MTA). Some box trucks are taller, so we plan the crossing for the truck we send.

Is Gramercy in the congestion toll zone?

Yes. The zone covers Manhattan’s local streets from 60th Street south (MTA). Ask us to include tolls in your written estimate.
